Project Summary

The HLPDAB seeks to “develop regulatory frameworks, facilitate technology transfers, encourage investment and strengthen public confidence in biotechnology in order to increase agricultural productivity and to protect the environment, with the ultimate objective of promoting food security.”  This three-day in-person workshop will provide information on current agricultural biotechnology resources that can facilitate information exchange on policy and regulatory frameworks, highlight how information sharing and communication can increase the transparency and predictability of regulatory reviews, and present efforts to standardize and harmonize biotechnology regulatory and policy systems. Through this engagement, workshop participants will work collaboratively to identify gaps in current agricultural biotechnology biosafety resources, information sharing and discuss opportunities and challenges faced by APEC member economies surrounding standardized applications and regulatory harmonization of policy frameworks for agricultural biotechnology. The outcomes of the meeting will be for member economies to enhance their understanding of existing agricultural biotechnology resources, identify if additional resources are needed, and determining whether increased biosafety resource sharing could enhance regional harmonization and increase trade of agricultural biotechnology products between member economies.
