Project Summary

Less than 1% of spending by large corporations on suppliers is earned by women-owned businesses (WOBs) (UN Women, 2017). WOBs generate millions of jobs and contribute significantly to the global economy, but barriers such as inadequate access to finance, lack of awareness of procurement systems, and smaller networks deter WOBs from accessing global value chains. Inclusive procurement programs enhance the reputation of companies and governments and can have a positive impact on profitability, resilience, and return on investment. Firms operating at the local and regional levels in APEC are less likely to intentionally source from WOBs than global companies. This project will develop a practical toolkit that policymakers can use to encourage the adoption of inclusive value chain strategies among local and regional-level businesses across APEC. Promoting more inclusive markets will strengthen the region’s economic resilience and expand the role of APEC SMEs in the global economy.
