Project Summary
The Asia Pacific region
faces a multitude of challenges in addressing pollution caused by plastic waste a proliferation of single-use plastic items, overpackaging, littering, and the lack of appropriate labeling.
APEC Leaders have acknowledged the importance of addressing these challenges and creating a more sustainable regional economy that is underpinned by robust efforts to reduce plastic waste and environmental pollution. Leveraging efforts that are underway, the goal of this activity is to strengthen the policy environment in APEC to guide the use of compostable bioplastics as well as provide more clarity for labeling and compostability standards, with the aim of reducing plastic pollution in the region. The project involves a study and a capacity building workshop that will focus on improving members’ understanding of best practices for compostable bioplastics and suitable policy responses that can support the use of alternatives to the use of plastic in food and beverage packaging.
