Project Summary

The economic cost of marine debris – including to tourism, to fishing, and shipping – is estimated at around $10.8 billion dollars annually for the APEC region.

Drawing from the 2021 APEC reference list on environmental and environmentally related services, Services that support the clean-up of marine debris will identify environmental and environmentally related services and the role they play in cleaning up ocean pollution.  The outcome will be APEC Policy Brief which will include recommendations to remove barriers to environmental services trade that support clean-up of marine debris – to be presented to ministers/leaders at AELW.

Services that support the clean-up of marine debris will include:(1) a public-private dialogue with industry to identify the market and scope of services providers as well as industry’s view on barriers to trade in environmental and environmentally related services; (2) a cross-fora workshop between the Group on Services and relevant fora to discuss recommendations for ministers/and or leaders at the AELW; (3) A APEC Policy Brief on marine debris and environmental and environmentally related services.
