Project Summary

This project is framed within the theme, “Developing and disseminating best practices on the application of visitor management techniques in APEC economies”, in line with the 4th priority of APEC Tourism Working Group Strategic Plan 2020-2024 “Sustainable Tourism and Economic Growth”. It consists of 4 outputs:

1. Enhance sustainable tourism management by adopting UNESCO Visitor Management Assessment Tool (VMAT), as appropriate. This includes developing a contextualized VMAT guideline for Thailand, and supporting the use of VMAT in generating strategies and action plans for 12 tourism destinations and World Heritage sites in Thailand.

2. Consider developing Asia-Pacific management standard to monitor impacts of tourism management through capacity-building workshop on VMAT at APEC level, as appropriate, review consistency of assessment principles, workplan and management method. This includes in-depth study to develop regional assessment guideline, to mobilize experts.

3. Exchange experiences and best practices in Asia-Pacific region. This includes activities to gather and publicize best practices in tourism management assessment in Thailand and APEC economies.

4. Ensure long-term positive image of travel destinations in Thailand and APEC economies through disseminating information of UNESCO visitor management assessment of these sites, as appropriate.
