Project Summary

Fisheries and other marine resources are vital to the APEC region and its people. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a serious threat to those resources, which also affects economic and sustainable growth. Combating IUU fishing is complex because of limited resources to enforce regulations across a vast ocean, so improving the coordination among member economies and using an integrated approach would prove beneficial to address this issue.

This project aims to promote a greater understanding of technological tools and how their use can support the fight against IUU. This project seeks to share how satellite data and machine learning can complement domestic and regional MCS systems and will outline how cutting-edge technology can support fisheries transparency to drive compliance and support cost-effective monitoring and efficient enforcement.
