Project Summary

As outlined in the discussion document to OFWG presented in February 2021, and as one of the components of New Zealand’s host year sustainability priorities, New Zealand seeks capacity building and the sharing of technical information between APEC economies to help promote greater awareness of seabird conservation and the threat of fisheries bycatch through the proposed webinar series.  The series will include sessions on mitigation measures, data collection, and economic drivers to implementing mitigation measures.

Seabird populations are declining globally, including New Zealand’s critically endangered Antipodean Albatross, which is at risk of extinction. Fisheries bycatch is one of the greatest threats to these birds and given their highly migratory nature, international protection and cooperation is needed to effectively manage these threats. Potential options for future collaboration on seabird conservation could be reported to OFWG following completion of the webinar series.
