Project Summary

Following the APEC Malaysia priorities of innovations and New Zealand’s 2021 APEC Policy Priorities of Sustainability, this proposal looks to provide a greater understanding of food waste reduction policies and practices. It is understood that the APEC region is seeing increased disruptions in food production and trade during the COVID-19 pandemic. Innovative practices in agricultural production can alleviate those strains and increase trade between APEC economies. The United States would like to conduct a workshop on the approach of Sustainable Materials Management and the life cycle perspective to address food waste and enhance resource use efficiency. The proposed workshop will include participants from private sector producers, NGOs, and universities to include a wide range of perspectives on the topic. The workshop will raise participants’ awareness of policies and sustainable practices to both reduce food waste and promote agriculture-led economic development in the APEC region.
