Project Summary

The APEC region, its economies, and its people are uniquely afflicted by cancer. APEC is home to 50% of total global cancer incidence, with cancer generally being the first or second leading cause of death in regional economies. In 2018, there were 8.8 million new cancer cases in APEC, and a staggering 5.5 million deaths. By 2030, against a backdrop of an expected population growth of only 9%, cancer incidence in APEC is expected to increase by around 35% and cancer mortality by 40%. This project proposes to facilitate greater regional cooperation on cancer control and to foster stronger and more effective cancer control policy programs in APEC member economies. By taking a holistic and innovative approach to cancer, APEC economies can reduce cancer prevalence and mortality for all individuals, thereby creating healthier populations, improving the economic and social inclusion of their citizens, and accelerating potential economic growth. Investing in health systems that prioritize cancer control policies will also enable accessible, consistent, and effective cancer treatment and screening, which will be of crucial importance in the coming months and years in light of the current COVID-19 pandemic.
