Project Summary

Start-ups disproportionately create high-value jobs and adjacent employment as they “scale-up”. Their growth can help commercialise science and research assets, contribute to social and environmental wellbeing, and accelerate recovery from economic shocks such as the COVID-19 pandemic. However, due to a complex set of barriers, value creation by start-up ecosystems remains concentrated and disadvantaged regions may be rapidly left behind if action is not taken to make them attractive and competitive. This three-hour virtual workshop will explore how policy interventions can support the development of start-up ecosystems. The workshop will encourage the exchange of ideas and experiences between APEC economies, from both public and private sector perspectives. It will bring together international experts on start-up ecosystems, policy makers, investors and intermediaries, and will encourage consideration of how innovation can be nurtured to kick-start inclusive and sustainable growth that can enjoyed throughout the region.
