Project Summary

New Zealand will organise the APEC’s 14th Good Regulatory Practice Conference (GRP14) building on recent achievements. For many years, APEC has been at the cutting edge of the dialogue on good regulatory practice (GRP) and its role in creating a regulatory environment that supports trade and investment. GRP14 will continue in this tradition to address:

·  the increasing importance of the digital economy;

·  the need for regulation to facilitate technological innovation, deal with disruptive or emerging technologies, and efficiently respond to a fast-paced digitalised world; and

·   the need to utilise technology to facilitate regulatory compliance and increase transparency.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created both challenges and opportunities for APEC economies. It has highlighted the importance of regulation that is both 1) resilient in the face of disruption, caused either by the pandemic or emerging technology, and 2) well-placed to foster economic recovery.

GRP14 will have a strong focus on international regulatory cooperation (IRC) and on the role of technology in complementing GRP tools. This 2-day event held in SOM 3 will be promoted to delegates from SCSC, EC and CTI. It will provide an opportunity for economies to share experience and to facilitate a dialogue between trade and regulatory policy officials, and those involved in standards and conformance.
