New Zealand proposes to self-fund work to provide an update on lessons learnt and good practice from the eight APEC-economy fossil-fuel subsidy (FFS) peer reviews conducted to date under the auspices of APEC and the G20 respectively, to be undertaken with the support of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The intent is to take stock of progress in phasing out FFS, the role of the peer review process in promoting reform, and potential ways, if any, to enhance the APEC peer review process. It is proposed that the work comprise both a report and virtual workshop to facilitate the further sharing of information and best practices resulting from reviews, to be delivered by end-June or early-July. Participation in the proposed workshop will be on a voluntary basis, with potential to invite non-APEC G20 economies to draw on a broader range of experience, if considered appropriate. The project aligns with the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040, commitments made by APEC Leaders in previous years to build regional capacity to rationalize and phase out fossil-fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption, and build upon the 2017 APEC Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform Capacity Building Workshop (EWG 12 2016A).
