Project Summary

New Zealand proposes to self-fund a virtual workshop to facilitate the further sharing of information and best practices relating to measures for addressing fisheries subsidies that contribute to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the APEC context.  This would build on the findings of the preceding report of New Zealand’s self-funded Stock Take of APEC Economies’ Existing Measures on Withdrawal of Subsidies in Cases Where There Has Been a Determination of IUU Fishing.  Like the stock take, this project is compatible with CTI’s agenda in support of the multilateral trading system, without prejudice to discussions on this issue in other international fora. This initiative has cross-fora linkages with the Ocean and Fisheries Working Group (OFWG), including alignment with the Roadmap on Combatting Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing.  Participation in the proposed workshop will be on a voluntary basis.
