Project Summary

The United States plans to organize a half-day workshop on the margins of the APEC IPEG meeting on patent grace periods.  The focus of the workshop is to educate APEC IPEG members on the importance of having a more uniform grace period standard, and that such a standard will benefit SMEs, university and research institute researchers. SMEs often lack the resources that larger companies have to make sure that their international patent filings are coordinated in such a manner that they will not lose their ability to file for patents in foreign jurisdictions because of differing laws governing grace period. Similarly, researchers who are now collaborating with inventors from all over the world must also make sure that they do not inadvertently lose patent rights. The workshop will provide IPEG members the opportunity to present on their respective laws and regulations on patent grace period. It will also provide IPEG members the opportunity to exchange views on how a uniform standard can benefit SMEs and researchers.
