ICT in agriculture has demonstrated how innovation can help create a more productive food system that is more sustainable and responsive to extreme weather events and climate change. It represents many opportunities to the Asia-Pacific region in particular, as many rely on agriculture for their livelihood. Sharing policy experiences and best practices on smart agriculture among APEC economies would be helpful in identifying tailored policies that contribute to sustainable growth and food security.
To this end, Korea plans to implement “Smart Agriculture Initiative for Sustainable Growth,” a 3-year work program to promote smart agriculture in the APEC region. The objectives of the initiative are (1) to build capacity in utilizing smart agriculture based on shared experiences and peer learning and (2)work to facilitate and expand smart agriculture in the APEC region to achieve a more sustainable and climate-friendly food system.
For the second year of this initiative, a three-day workshop will take place in Seoul, Korea. The workshop includes a visit to Korean Smart Farms which adopted ICT farming systems for sustainable and climate-friendly production and aims to achieve better understanding among member economies of applying smart agriculture in the fields.
