The SCE-led Policy Dialogue on Bridging Gap in Economic Development and Integration of Remote Areas for Sustainable Growth in the APEC Region held in August 2017 in the margins of SOM3 revealed that fundamental problems remote areas face are, in particular, caused by the lack of access to adequate infrastructure, transportation and ICT. Recognizing the urgent need to address these issues, the Russian Federation proposes to conduct a Public-Private Dialogue under the theme of “Remote Areas Development in the Digital Era” (hereinafter referred to as the PPD), specifically focusing on the APEC region.
The PPD will provide a platform for experts of the APEC region to discuss various policy approaches and concrete practical steps aimed to stimulate socio-economic growth of remote areas in the region through the use of digital economy instruments. The meeting will contribute to identifying the main bottlenecks and barriers remote areas face and the ways the digital technologies can help to overcome such impediments. The PPD will specifically examine the advantages and challenges of potential adoption of cross-cutting technologies in services sectors, including finances, education and healthcare.
