This project is designed as a part of the program pursued under the 3nd CBNI in the areas of Intellectual Property. As international trade faces a rising number of intellectual property disputes and given the importance of adequate protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPRs), one of the most important areas of intense negotiation has been the FTA IP chapter.
In 2014 and 2016, the APEC Capacity Building Workshops on FTA Negotiation Skills on Intellectual Property were held in Viet Nam with the aim of providing in-depth capacity building for negotiators and policymakers. Korea will hold a one-and-a-half day FTAAP capacity-building workshop in June 2018 in Korea as a follow-up activity to build on the implications and recommendations of the two previous Workshops.
The workshop intends to provide an opportunity for negotiators to review the alignment of TRIPs and the FTA IP chapter with a special focus on pharmaceutical patents and geographical indications. It also plans to help enhance the understanding of participants from various APEC member economies through relevant case studies, and facilitate a rich exchange of views on various matters concerning newly emerging intellectual property issues in FTAs/RTAs negotiations.
