Project Summary

This project proposes to develop two tools to facilitate the harmonisation of import maximum residue limits (MRLs) for pesticides. One is a database that will capture relevant information about government administration of regulatory import MRLs for pesticides in APEC member economies and the other is a template that will describe the necessary information that will enable an import MRL request to be raised to any APEC member economy. The development of these two tools was agreed by participating APEC member economies at a MRL workshop held in Hanoi in May 2017, and endorsed subsequently by the APEC Food Safety Cooperation Forum. These two tools will facilitate the reduction of technical barriers to food trade arising from differing national pesticide MRLs among APEC member economies. The tools will be complementary to the APEC Import MRL Guideline for Pesticides - a guideline on possible approaches to achieve alignment of international MRLs.
