Project Summary

Electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen technologies are important components in the APEC region’s transition to a low-carbon future.  Increasing the use of EVs and Hydrogen will help advance APEC Leaders’ 2010 commitment to help “establish a low-carbon society in which we maintain economic growth while protecting the environment.”

Continuing reductions in battery prices will likely bring the cost of EVs below conventional vehicles by 2025, even with low oil prices. Recent research suggests that big reductions in battery prices lie ahead, and that EVs will become price competitive with conventional vehicles within a decade. However, growth of EV and Hydrogen markets will depend heavily on supportive policy settings by APEC economies.  This workshop aims to:

·  gain a deeper understanding of the trends and opportunities presented by hydrogen and EV technologies, their potential impact on regional and national energy systems, and the role these technologies could play to facilitate APEC economies’ transition to a low-carbon future; and

·  identify barriers to the development and uptake of these technologies and share best optimal policy practice to catalyse the APEC hydrogen and EV agendas, expediting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Workshop presentations and any other tabled materials will be made available through APEC’s Meeting Document Database, with support from the APEC Secretariat.  A brief summary report of the discussions and conclusions from the workshop will also be produced for sharing with APEC members and publication by APEC.
