Project Summary

Consistent with APEC 2014 Rank 2 Funding Criteria to Implement the APEC Food Security Road Map Towards 2020, as endorsed by Leaders in 2013, this study will help APEC economies identify innovative technologies and best practices to address post-harvest loss (PHL) throughout the region (10 – 50% of food is lost post-harvest).  PHL results in higher food prices and reduced real income, which disproportionately affect lower income farmers and consumers.

To help APEC address PHL, we propose a survey on best practices and innovative technologies, to be launched on the margins of the PPFS Plenary Meeting in August and / or Food Security Ministerial in September 2014. This survey will provide an opportunity to identify and compare innovative technologies and best practices on PHL across APEC, and the survey will also provide as more rigorous analysis in a subset of APEC economies with common challenges on primary food value chains.
